Motifate

2020
A women using the Motifate App

Motifate is a mobile app that helps people to build healthy habits. It's a self-funded project I launched in 2020. This is a brief case study and showcase of the product.

You can visit our product landing page or download the app via Appstore

"We often seem to dismiss small changes because they don’t seem to matter very much in the moment." – James Clear

Significant changes often comes from making small and incremental adjustments to our habits. Motifate was born out of the need to make that change easier and more enjoyable. In 2020, I co-founded this product with two partners who share the same interest and passion in habit-building.

My Role

Product Vision & Strategy

I set the vision and definition of the product. I planned the roadmap and prioritise the feature backlog from inception to launch. collaborated with my partners to set the go-to-market strategy of the product.

UX & Interaction Design

I envisioned the product's user journey and designed the app's interactions and user interfaces. I collaborated with my partners to set the visual and tonal directions of the app.

The Vision

Our vision for Motifate was heavily inspired by Atomic Habit by James Clear. James taught us that habits are formed by reinforcing the Habit Loop, and he outlined principles and strategies to strengthen each stage of the cycle.

Principles of habit formations that were outlined in Atomic Habits.

After practicing the habit-building methods on our own, we realised we could use some external help to make this process easier. This was the starting point of the product's value proposition.

The Product

Create Customised Routines

Users can choreograph any routines to reinforce the habits that they want to develop. Think meditations, journaling, exercise and even cleaning routines. Each routine are made up by bite-size actions to perform. User can also set schedules and reminders as cues to trigger the habit loop.

Learn From The Community

Beyond making your own routine, users can adopts the routines from others. The Routine Library allows users to browse routines composed by influencers and other users of the app.

Let the Music Follow

With integration with Apple Music and Spotify, users can set the go-to playlist to accompany a routine, making the experience to be more enjoyable and meaningful.

Track & Analyse Progress

When it's time to reflect, users can view their progress on a monthly basis. The app shows key indicators such as completion and time spent for each routine.

The Impact

As a self-funded project, we launched the app without advertisement spending, our user acquisitions came from blogging and social media, and we were impressed by the results in adoption. These numbers were snapshotted 3 months since launched :

383 Total App Downloads

24 Weekly Active Users

25% Retention on 30 Days Cohort

On the other hand, the biggest problem we saw since launched was the low activation rate. Less than 10% of the people who downloaded the app completed their first routine.

We hypothesised that this might be due to the lack of support for user onboarding at the moment. This would require more qualitative feedbacks from users to validate.

Moving forward, our focus for Motivate is to further improve the product while building a community for the app's user from all over the world. As a companion for self-improvement, I believe Motifate will grow along side its users on the days to come.
